Educating for a Sustainable Future - Resources

Box 1.8.1: Statements About Environmental Values

  1. The survival of the planet is more important than the survival of humanity. We should all act towards the planet and its ecosystems in the same way as we act towards our own home and family.

  2. The natural environment is there to be exploited by those in the North with the technology to do so.

  3. The world's population problem is the rate of consumption in the North rather than the rate of population growth in the South.

  4. Something must be done about air pollution in our cities. The occurrence of asthma must be reversed.

  5. Plants and animals have as much right to exist as we do.

  6. Pollution must be reduced. Global warming is likely to cause more droughts in Africa. If we harm the planet we harm ourselves.

  7. We must take care of the Earth, not because we inherited it from our parents but because we have borrowed it from our children.

  8. Ozone depletion must be reduced. Skin cancer is a real threat to light skinned people who live or holiday in hot, sunny places

  9. The most important species are those at the beginning of the food chain which replenish oxygen, not humans at the end of the food chain.

  10. Endangered species must be protected or future generations will only be able to see them on film or in museums.
