Educating for a Sustainable Future - Resources

Introduction 1.3

This activity seeks to establish what you think EE is like in schools. Another purpose of this exercise, which should come over clearly, is to establish the difference between the cognitive and fieldwork focus of environmental studies and the wider concerns with affective education and action in EfS. EE takes place in, for and about the environment whereas environmental studies takes place in and is about the environment.

The first activity looks at impressions of environmental education (EE) in your schools. What usually comes over is the difference between environmental studies (ES) and EE. Teachers often think that EE is a refined version of ES concerned ie it is mainly concerned with knowledge about the environment. They often prefer it to be based on whole school approaches ie EE which is reflected in the formal, operational and non-formal curricula of schools.
